Brick by Brick Brigade
Esteli, Nicaragua
New dates! April 27th-May 6th, 2023
Join us for a historic delegation to Nicaragua! This brigade will take place in one of the country’s most revolutionary and beautiful towns: Esteli, known for being “three times heroic” in the Sandinista struggle for national sovereignty. The delegation will visit and work alongide members of the Rural Workers’ Association (ATC), the organization that represents the people who grow the country’s food, and a founding member of the international movement for food sovereignty, La Via Campesina.
As part of the Friends of ATC’s “Brick by Brick” campaign, the brigade will help put the finishing touches on the mural at the local ATC Federation’s new auditorium, which will be inaugurated as part of the ATC’s 45th anniversary and May Day celebrations. Brigadistas will also exchange with families and get their hands dirty at the ATC’s nearby agroecological farms, plus visit experiences in organizing tobacco workers.

Additional Information:
The Asociación de Trabajadores del Campo (ATC) represents farmworkers and small farmers in Nicaragua. It was founded in the 1970s in the context of the repressive, US-backed Somoza dictatorship, with a focus on addressing rural workers needs and their hopes for an improved quality of life in the countryside. During the 1980s in the first phase of the Sandinista Popular Revolution, the ATC played an integral role in the agrarian reform which redistributed a substantial part of arable land in Nicaragua into the hands of peasant families. Today, the ATC organizes in both farmworker unions and agricultural cooperatives, focused on working conditions and trainings, as well as agroecological food production for food sovereignty. The ATC is a founding member organization of the global peasant movement, La Vía Campesina.
The Friends of ATC was founded in 2016 in order to strengthen solidarity with the ATC and its banners of struggle. The heart of its work is delegations to Nicaragua like this one.
