Nicaragua & COVID-19
Nicaragua has maintained some of the fewest cases of the coronavirus in the world and exceptionally lower rates than its neighbor countries in Central America. Since mid-March, the Sandinista government of Nicaragua has been responding to COVID-19 through community-based health brigades and education, based in the cultural, social, and economic conditions in the country. Recognizing that there are up to today’s date no cases of community transmission in the country and little international travel into Nicaragua, the government has encouraged Nicaraguans to take preventative measures while allowing people to continue working and going to school. Rather than celebrate the Sandinista government’s ability to prevent the spread of the virus AND maintain working Nicaraguans’ economic stability so that all Nicaraguans can keep food on the table, international media has consistently accused the Sandinistas of lying about the number of confirmed cases in the country and criticized the government for keeping the economy open. Here we share articles that reflect the reality of COVID-19 in Nicaragua:
